Jake, 21, came to Spring Street hostel in June 2017. He had recently separated from his partner, with whom he has a young daughter and was sofa-surfing at friends' houses. He has a strained relationship with his mother and living with his father would mean that Jake would not be able to see his daughter regularly. After struggling to find a place to live, Jake was referred to the hostel. Staying at Spring Street has given Jake the chance to remain in the area, enabling him to continue to see his daughter on a regular basis. Jake has enjoyed his time at Spring Street. Case Study: Alcohol and drugs left me fighting for my life…

Gordon, from Kirklees, was left fighting for his life after years of heavy alcohol and drugs use. He was referred to Horton Housing’s Spring Street accommodation, a housing and support scheme for single men in Kirklees who are homeless and have support needs. Gordon had a long history of drugs and alcohol abuse since becoming heavily involved with the Manchester club scene as a teenager. Despite trying to reduce his drinking, Gordon ended up homeless and was referred to Horton Housing’s Spring Street Hostel. There he met his support worker Nichola who has been with him throughout his recovery. He is now living independently and volunteering for a recovery service in Huddersfield, helping others to address their substance misuse problems. We have 15 self-contained single person properties in various locations across Calderdale and Kirklees. Each resident has their own bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom; some properties have a study space. All properties are fully furnished and equipped. The service is available Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. Support workers visit the properties twice a week (depending on the clients’ needs) and offer housing-related support. We also have 12 self-contained single person flats to provide short-term accommodation for residents moving on from the hostel.
