Horton Community Cafes win national housing award

Our Horton Community Cafes, which run in Selby and Craven, have picked up a prestigious national housing award. The cafes won the ‘Support and Care Team of the Year, under 8,000 stock’ category at the Housing Heroes Awards, which are organised by the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing magazine. Horton Community Cafes aim to improve the lives of adults who have mental health issues or who are at risk of or experiencing social isolation. Informal learning sessions and activities help clients increase their confidence, develop skills and access volunteering and employment opportunities. The cafes are an early intervention and prevention service that help to stop problems escalating and reaching crisis level. Service: Co-ordinated Advice Support Tenancy Ready Service (CASTRS)

Phone 01274 739926 CASTRS is a drop-in service available for our clients to access information, advice and support. The service runs every Monday from 10am to 2pm at Horton's Training Centre. The drop-ins help clients with signposting, benefit claims, PIP, ESA and JSA sanctions and appeals. The service provides advocacy on the behalf of clients and staff are on-hand to support clients with calls to external agencies and with collecting of proof of ID. Computers are available for clients to fill out online applications and search for jobs and training courses. The cafés are held weekly and fortnightly in community venues in Selby, Eggborough, Tadcaster, South Milford and Hambleton. Venues are wheelchair accessible. Our community cafés provide informal learning sessions and activities in a safe and relaxed atmosphere. Sessions include healthy eating, exercise, IT skills, mental wellbeing, crime prevention, arts and craft workshops. Many of the sessions are delivered in partnership with other organisations and are suitable for people with learning disabilities. We run a drop-in for clients at our office based in Halifax. The service is open every Monday to Friday, 2pm – 4pm. Clients are given advice and support on housing, substance misuse, mental health, budgeting and training and employment. Our office has computers for clients to build their CVs, look for work and bid on properties. A meeting room and two interview rooms are also available.
